Improvement patents of open source hardware?

Due to the fact that open source hardware is essentially anti-patent, in what way is an open source hardware designer able to protect an incomplete project that is being openly published as it is being built, from patent trolls that might attempt to swoop in, and try to patent obvious “improvements” to the incomplete and in-progress design?

One possible solution to this that occurs to me, is to explicitly list as part of the prior art and documentation disclosure, many of the potential obvious improvements that could be done by someone “skilled in the art” of whatever this thing does…

But which are not being done in this specific case, because of reasons X, Y, Z…
